Ask a Hairstylist: What Haircuts Will Allow Me to Wear My Fine, Thin, Curly Hair Down?

Q: Hello Bill! I’m looking for a hairstyle for my fine, thin, naturally curly hair that would allow me to wear it down instead of up in a bun.
My hair is so fine that it gets oily and weighed down, forcing me to wash it every two days (at least). I always let it air-dry after finger-combing and scrunching to add body, and to keep the curls as intact as possible.
However, rarely does my hair dry in such a way that I can leave it down. My hair is constantly falling out due to stress, and it it is so limp, sparse and poufy that most days I just pin it up in a low bun.
I let my waves add texture and height to my crown, and pull out some pieces around my bangs and ears to give it a softer look. It works, sort of—but I would like to find a style that is less blah and mousy.
If I keep my hair at this length, I want to be able to wear it down more often. If I go shorter, I want to make sure the cut suits my face shape. As you can see, I have a high forehead, which I don’t necessarily feel like I need to hide, but I would like to find a style that flatters me and looks sophisticated.
I am open to any ideas, from helpful products to new styling techniques to a super-short cut. My hair grows extremely slowly, so a long style isn’t really an option.
Thank you so much for your time! I find all of your hair consults to be spot on. — Allison
A: Allison, thank you for sending in your photos and your request for a consultation. Fine hair is very pretty when handled properly, and I think you have a good grasp of what works well with yours.
Here is a wispy shag that would be a great shape for you.
You can just let it fall flat and into your waves. Your current air-drying technique will work perfectly with this style.
You could also touch up your hair with a curling iron for an even curlier look.
Note the long bangs, which are ideal for a high forehead and can create the illusion of fuller hair. They will also help to frame your face when you do want to wear your hair up.
I have to say, my favourite style for your hair type is a classic chin-length bob.
This shorter length will add volume to make thin hair seem fuller.
I would also encourage you to play around with your part. Flipping your hair to the opposite side of where it naturally wants to part will give you more volume.
Parting your hair down the middle will give you an edgier look.
If you want to go even shorter, here is a pixie cut that will suit your curly hair texture and face shape.
