Dove Cameron, Before and After

Our first photo is from 2008, when Dove was only 12 years old. Except she wasn’t Dove back then—she went by her birth name, Chloe Hosterman, when her acting career was just getting off the ground. As you can see, it’s not just her name that was different. There was also quite a distinctive bump down the bridge of her nose, her lips were on the thinner side, and her natural hair colour was light brown.

At 17, she got her big break with Liv and Maddie, and by this time, she had legally changed her name to Dove. See what I mean about her skin? It’s so poreless and glowy! But her lower lip indicates that she may have already dabbled with fillers, and the tip of her nose suggests a possible early rhinoplasty. The bridge also looks flattened, making the area between her eyes seem unnatural. There’s even speculation that her dimples were attained through a surgical procedure (yes, such a thing exists now!). 

Then, she took her hair a little shorter—either that, or removed her extensions—and dyed it a more natural-looking strawberry blonde. Her lips seem more natural here, and her nasal bridge doesn’t look quite as flat (although that could be built up with filler, too!). Also notice her cleft chin, because that changes later on.

Dove kept the reddish blonde hair through most of 2014, wearing it with dramatic long lashes, natural makeup and slightly over-plucked brows (she was 18 at this point). If she did have filler in her top lip, it seems mostly gone now, since it is back to its previous thinner shape. If I only saw photos like this, where she’s smiling, I’d never suspect that she’d undergone any cosmetic interventions!

But it seems that Dove was back to enhancements by the end of 2014, because her lower lip once again appeared swollen. This time, she left the top one alone, which is a very good trick to fool people into thinking that nothing was done. We also get a good look at the tip of her nose in this shot, and it definitely has an unnatural, chiseled appearance. 

At 19, Dove slowly began the transition from Disney cutie to young starlet. So we’ve got several Hollywood upgrades here, including the bright blonde hair, voluminous waves, fuller brows and sophisticated makeup. See how her lower lip dips in the middle, but is puffy on either side? That’s a specific look known as “double-lobed” lips, achievable with fillers.

With her hair up, and in dramatic lashes and newfound bushy brows, Dove looks a little different here. If it weren’t for her pinched-looking nasal tip, I’m not sure I would have recognized her! Again, take note of her lips. The lower one appears to have been re-injected, making it bigger than ever. 

Only a few months later, Dove made a radical change to her image by lightening her hair to platinum blonde. She can pull off this colour with her ultra-pale skin, but it’s definitely a more grown-up vibe—marking a departure from her wholesome Disney days. Especially since she paired it with plumped-up lips and extreme strobing. I don’t understand this trend of dabbing shine on the tip of your nose!

By the end of the year, she looked even more “plastic,” and I’m not sure it’s just from her makeup and new hair colour. Here, Dove’s lips rival Kylie Jenner’s in size, with generous amounts of filler apparently placed not only in the bottom lip but also the top. It also seems like she has more of a nasal bridge compared to, say, 2013, but it could just be the lighting. At this time, she had just split from fellow Disney alum Ryan McCarten, so perhaps the makeover was her version of a breakup haircut?!

The following year, at age 21, Dove continued to experiment with a bolder beauty aesthetic, rocking bright platinum hair and dramatic false lashes. If you look at her lips, the top one is no longer quite as full, but the bottom one juts out in an unnatural way. If you’ve been paying close attention, you may have also noticed that she no longer has the hooded eyes and bump on her nose from when she was 12.

In 2018, Dove kept the white-blonde colour. She also started getting into edgier hair and makeup looks, like this long braid and smoky cat eyes—another move to distance herself from her Disney image. The lip injections don’t seem to have stopped. In fact, you can even see a bit of the inner tissue that her lipstick can’t adhere to properly. 

By age 23, Dove’s face had changed again, and I don’t think it’s because she finally shed all her baby fat. Her cheekbones are so prominent here, and her features so symmetrical, that I can only assume she got more injections. Also notice how her cleft chin is filled in now, and how her brow tails are pulling upward. 

In 2020, she seemed to tone things down a bit. I like the darker roots, and the sheer, rosy makeup is grown-up but still pretty. The fuller lips are still there, but aren’t as over-the-top. However, the fact that the tails are the highest point of her eyebrows indicates that they may have been lifted—either surgically or with Botox.

Just when we thought she’d forever be blonde, Dove surprised us all by going brunette. While it’s unclear if this is her natural colour, the shift started in 2020. “I haven’t dyed my hair in six months, which has been great for me because as a blonde this shit requires so much maintenance,” she explained at the time.² As for her facial features, she’s maintained the double-lobed lip look, but her eyebrows look high and straight now instead of only arching up at the tails.

Clearly, Dove is still loving life as a brunette, because she stepped out with an even darker ‘do—almost black—in 2022. (How is it possible that she pulls off both blonde and black hair equally well?!) Meanwhile, her features are looking a bit different, too. Obviously, we know about her lips and nose, but now there’s more projection of her cheeks and chin, and a bigger distance from her lashes to eyebrows.

So, is this proof of Dove Cameron before plastic surgery and injections? I think the photos speak for themselves—and it’s quite possible that she started changing her features at a very young age, while she was still a teenager.

If that seems strange, you should know that Dove’s mother, Bonnie Wallace, has written a book called The Hollywood Parents Guide: Your Roadmap to Pursuing Your Child’s Dream. “My daughter Dove and I moved to Los Angeles from an island in Washington State when she was 14, armed only with her headshot, resume of community theater roles, and her dream,” she reveals.

Knowing that her family was willing to relocate in pursuit of fame, it’s not a stretch to believe that cosmetic interventions were also on the table. After all, rhinoplasty is practically mandatory to get ahead in Hollywood these days, and it’s no longer unusual for teenage celebs to get fillers. My guess is that Dove had her nose reshaped when her face hadn’t fully matured, which might explain the flattened bridge and pinched tip.

“You can see that the nose is much broader [before] in the middle vault,” says Dr. Daniel Barrett. “You don’t see that [after]; you actually see a much more defined middle vault. That doesn’t happen with aging or anything else other than a rhinoplasty, in my opinion.”³

Dr. Charles S. Lee also thinks that her nose was surgically altered—and that’s not all. “It’s pretty obvious that she has narrowing of the nasal tip area as well as the bone. I see obviously much more fullness in her lips; probably two syringes or so of filler. The chin looks a little narrower to me... I’m going to go with filler in this case because the change is relatively subtle.”⁴

Then there’s the newly lifted look of her eyelids and brows. Did she use Botox to achieve that, or are the changes more permanent?

"When I look at her brow and her upper eyelid area, there’s a little bit more platform show on the upper lid,” says Dr. Lee. “So this could be part of either a ‘fox eye trend’ surgery or it could be Botox. But Botox is difficult to get this level of precision, so I’m going to go with surgery. From [the side] angle, it’s much more obvious that the hooding is gone, so she probably had a lift [and] removed some skin....”

So far, Dove hasn’t gone on record admitting to any of it, even though she has a fan base of impressionable teens. Is it any wonder that the under-18 crowd are seeking out cosmetic procedures in higher numbers than ever before?
