Editor’s Picks: 7 of the Best Salicylic Acid Toners to Exfoliate, Clarify and Mattify Your Skin
Salicylic acid toner is a product that anyone can use—even if you don’t have acne. That’s because it comes in a range of strengths, from mild to strong, so you can choose your level of exfoliation.
As a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), salicylic acid removes dead cells from the surface of your skin.1 So by using it in a toner, it can help all skin types to look brighter and more even-toned. Plus, any treatments that you apply next will work even better because you’ve removed dead skin build-up and product residue.
Of course, salicylic acid toners are also great for keeping oily skin and breakouts at bay if those do happen to be your key skin struggles. Unlike alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), BHAs penetrate pores to give them a deep-clean while also dissolving excess oil.2 But since they have a larger molecule size and anti-inflammatory properties, you won’t experience the irritation that is often associated with glycolic acid.3

What to Look for in a Salicylic Acid Toner
When choosing a salicylic acid toner, keep the following features in mind:
- Up to 2% salicylic acid: If you’re new to salicylic acid, 0.5% is a great place to start (and according to Dr. Joshua Zeichner, “mild enough to use every day without causing irritation”).4 Oily and acne-prone skin can usually tolerate a higher concentration, such as 1-2%, which will be more effective for treating those conditions.
- Low pH (optional): Although many brands don’t disclose their products’ pH levels, you should know that salicylic acid penetrates best at low (acidic) pH level. One study found that the higher the pH level, the less acid gets absorbed.5 This is important if you’re using a salicylic acid toner to treat a challenging skin condition like acne. For best results, look for toners with a pH level around 3.0-4.0. Just keep in mind that they will be more drying.
- Low in fragrance: Since fragrance (whether synthetic or natural) is often the culprit behind skin irritation, look for products that are low in fragrance or fragrance-free.6
- Low in alcohol (optional): Alcohol is sometimes beneficial because it can act as a penetration enhancer to help active ingredients get into the skin. However, it can also be drying, especially in products like toners, which don’t contain hydrating ingredients to offset this effect.7 With so many alcohol-free options now available (including everything in this guide), I see no reason to use toners with this ingredient.
