Bella Hadid, Before and After

We’ll start with Bella’s very first red carpet event, at age 14. As a natural blonde, she was already dyeing her hair dark brown. (“I just have a darker personality,” she once explained. “And my sister being blonde and me being brunette, it’s a good separation.”³) While she may have kept the same hair colour to this day, we can’t say the same for her facial features. Looking at her distinctive nose, this photo was taken pre-rhinoplasty.

It was in 2014, at age 17, that she started hitting the Hollywood circuit with her older sister, Gigi. Post-rhinoplasty, the bump that she used to have on the bridge of her nose (which you can see in 2010) has now disappeared. Also, despite her claim that she hasn’t had fillers, her upper lip is fuller than the lower one, which is atypical.

“I was the uglier sister,” Bella recalls. “I was the brunette. I wasn’t as cool as Gigi, not as outgoing. That’s really what people said about me.... I always felt like I had something to prove.”² Knowing that, is it any surprise that she felt compelled to alter her nose at such a young age? In this shot, the upper bridge is noticeably flatter, and there’s a lot more definition around the tip. 

Doesn’t she look like Jennifer Lawrence here?! (Specifically, JLaw during her brunette era circa 2012.) Apparently, I’m not the only one to make that comparison—Bella has said that it happens “multiple times a day.”⁵ By now, she had her red carpet style on lock with flawless skin and sophisticated hair and makeup. I also can’t help but notice how symmetrical her features are... no wonder she came closest to the Golden Ratio!⁴

Then, the 19-year-old beauty switched things up with loose hair, tone-on-tone highlights, and a rarely-seen pop of pink on her lips. But I think her features are continuing to evolve beyond just the nose (with its newly flatter bridge and bony-looking tip). Her face doesn’t seem as round anymore, and we’re starting to see more projected cheekbones. Is it from weight loss... or something else?

The following year, Bella’s cheeks took on a life of their own. To me, this looks like they were enhanced with filler... a whole lot of filler! (Some folks suspected that she had her buccal fat removed at this time, too, but I think that was a more recent development.) Then, there’s the matter of her eye area. It looks “pulled,” like the effect that you’d get from a too-tight ponytail. Maybe this is the first time she used the face tape!

Next, she rocked a bombshell look that was very off-brand for her (although I do quite like the voluminous hairstyle and muted red lipstick). Her cheeks don’t seem as unnatural here, nor does her eye area appear as lifted up. However, her top lip is back to looking plumper than the bottom one.

If you ask me, Bella’s best beauty move is always slicked-back hair, neutral makeup and glowy skin, and that’s exactly what she went with here. If she did have injections in 2017, they appear to have settled—so while her features are vastly different from just a few years prior, there’s nothing that stands out as obviously “fake.” Alas, that wasn’t the case for long....

Yes, this is still Bella! There’s something a little Melania Trump about this round of changes, no? Although she was only 22 here, the “pulled” look of her eye area is back, and it’s reminiscent of an aggressive, old-school face lift. If this is indeed face tape like she claims, my question is why? Why would anyone tape their skin so they could look like this on purpose?!

In 2020, she made only one red carpet appearance, and her look is almost as surprising as the year before. Along with her feline eyes, her face has become much narrower and more angular, with a new “V” shape to her jawline that wasn’t there in 2015. Is that from taping, too? (How much can tape really do?!) Weight loss may be a factor, but I’m not ruling out injections and/or surgery.

Thankfully, the face tape wasn’t so obviously in play upon Bella’s return to the red carpet in 2021. Like I said, this is the type of look that really suits her best—hair tight and scraped back, with soft and beautifully blended makeup. As we’ve witnessed countless times with other celebs, rhinoplasty changes the balance of your features to put more focus on the eyes—and she has really beautiful eyes.

She walked the same red carpet a year later, once again with a tight, unforgiving hairstyle. (So I’m wondering where, exactly, this face tape is supposedly hidden?) With the dramatic eye makeup and heavily sculpted cheekbones, she looks more cat-like than ever. Is it just makeup... or did she have a buccal fat removal procedure like Chrissy Teigen?

After stepping away from the spotlight to focus on her health—as well as her new fragrance brand, Orabella—Bella returned to the red carpet this year. “Now when anybody sees me in pictures and they say, I look happy, I genuinely am,” she said in a recent interview.⁶ 

Often, it can be hard to tell whether a celebrity really tinkered with her face, or if the changes were just from normal aging. Not so with Bella. Comparing these two photos, it’s clearly not possible to achieve her new look without some kind of intervention.

Even so, she maintains that the rhinoplasty was her one and only procedure. “People think I fully fucked with my face because of one picture of me as a teenager looking puffy. I’m pretty sure you don’t look the same now as you did at 13, right? I have never used filler. Let’s just put an end to that. I have no issue with it, but it’s not for me. Whoever thinks I’ve gotten my eyes lifted or whatever it’s called—it’s face tape! The oldest trick in the book.”²

Let’s ask the experts. Besides the confirmed nose job, what else do plastic surgeons think she’s had done? Could it really just be face tape?!

“Face tape can be quite dramatic for some people for the lower face and the neck, but I haven’t really seen it [in widespread use] for the brows and the eyes,” says Dr. Anthony Youn. “The change in her lips, to me, resembles that of injectable filler.”⁷

“Miss Hadid appears to have had fillers to enhance her cheek structure... and received lip fillers to accentuate her lip volume,” says Dr. Norman Rowe. “Also, it seems like she’s undergone either a surgical brow lift or use of neuromodulators [Botox].”⁸

“Her upper eyelids appear more open and her brow arch has changed. Her face appears more slender, angular and less rounded. It could be the result of filler injections or facial plastic surgery,” says Dr. James Marotta.⁹

“Her jawline is more defined and her [lower] cheeks are less full,” says Dr. Matthew Schulman. “This can be achieved with buccal fat pad reduction, or removal of some fat from the cheeks. Her chin is more prominent and may be the result of a chin implant as well.”¹⁰

“I think she had nose surgery, eyelid surgery, liposuction of the neck, buccal fat removal, and then filler to her cheeks and to the forehead,” says Dr. Charles S. Lee.¹¹

If these doctors’ suspicions are correct, this might be the most extensive list of enhancements that we’ve ever seen in a Before and After!
